Head to the Arc de Triomphe entrance, located at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, one of Paris' busiest roundabouts. Since there is no crosswalk here, you'll have to take the underground stairs from the Champs-Élysées or Rue de la Grande-Armée to reach the arch.
Skip the long ticketing line with your online tickets, pass through the security check, and enter the arch.
Start your climb (or take the elevator) to the mezzanine level which houses the museum with interactive exhibits showcasing the history of the monument. Don't forget to pick up a free copy of the information booklet, available in 11 languages. Once done, continue your climb to access the rooftop for panoramic views of Paris.
The digital devices installed here will give you a detailed history of every monument before your eyes.
Steps climbed: 242 to the mezzanine level; also accessible by elevator and 42 steps to the rooftop; with no elevator access.
Climb back down and spend some time exploring the base of the triumphal arch, which is of great architectural interest with inscriptions of the names of martyred generals and sculptures depicting important French events. Pay your respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, easily identifiable by the eternal flame that has been burning since 1923.
