Preserved intact, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum acts as a stark reminder of one of the most terrible crimes committed against humanity. Over 1.1 million men, women, and children have lost their lives at the largest of Germany's former concentration and extermination camps.
Your tour begins at Auschwitz I; known as a stammlager in Germany, this was the former main camp and the administrative headquarters of the camp complex. See the numerous photographs and belongings of the prisoners, along with the spot where Rudolf Hess, the camp's longest-serving commander, was executed as a war criminal in 1947.
Take a short break before proceeding towards Auschwitz II, the site of the concentration camp. Among other elements, you will find reminders of the dark history of World War II, including ruins of crematoria, gas chambers, and the railway platform.
