Originating over 1,500 years ago, sumo is a ceremonial practice that embodies Japan's values of strength, discipline, and respect. This small-group guided tour of the sumo stable offers an exclusive opportunity to delve into Japan's national sport. Your journey begins with a meeting with your expert local guide, who will share a wealth of knowledge about sumo wrestling while you don your audio headsets for a personal touch. As you enter the sumo stable, you'll witness the athletes performing traditional rituals, such as the powerful foot stomps and symbolic salt throws that purify the ring. You'll see firsthand the intense practice sessions where wrestlers perfect skills like palm strikes, thrusts, and body slams while your guide gives you personalized insights.
After the practice, enjoy a unique tea session where you can meet the sumo wrestlers. Ask them about their training, daily routines, or their most memorable matches, and don’t miss the fun photo ops—capture the moment with these imposing figures and maybe even try out a few sumo poses yourself! The experience culminates with a hearty chanko nabe lunch. This traditional stew is packed with protein and vegetables, providing the energy sumo wrestlers need to maintain their strength. With ingredients like chicken, tofu, and a rich broth, chanko nabe fuels the giants of sumo. As you finish the last few bites of this delicious meal, you'll be utterly satisfied with the wealth of knowledge you obtained on Japan's most treasured sport.
