Berggasse 19 in Vienna is renowned as the former residence and practice of Sigmund Freud for 47 years until his departure due to Nazi persecution in 1938. This iconic site attracts over 100,000 visitors annually from around the world. Following a significant expansion and renovation completed in 2020, the museum now offers an enriched experience with preserved original structures, historical artifacts, documents, and photographs that explore Freud's professional journey and personal life.
Explore Anna Freud’s living quarters and workspace where she integrated psychoanalysis with pedagogy. Ascend the historic staircase connecting the mezzanine to the "doctor’s apartment" on the upper ground floor. Here lies the permanent exhibition Hidden Thoughts of a Visual Nature, featuring works by artists such as Franz West, Heimo Zobernig, Susan Hiller, and John Baldessari.
The museum also presents its first post-renovation special exhibit: Analysis Interminable. Psychoanalytic Schools of Thought after Freud. This exhibition includes fascinating short films and interviews with five practicing psychoanalysts from New York, Dublin, and Berlin.
