The journey starts with a crew-led tour into the ship's mechanical core, offering rare views of areas typically off-limits:
- Anchor Windlass Room
- Engine and Boiler Rooms
- After-Steering Station
- Oil and Water Testing Labs
- Exclusive passageways only used by sailors since 1943
The tour showcases how the ship’s eight boilers and four steam turbines produced 212,000 shaft horsepower—enough to power 650 Ford F-150 trucks. This enabled IOWA to reach a record-breaking speed of 35 knots (40 mph), unmatched by any other battleship.
Your guide, an active crew member, will share fascinating stories about the sailors’ service and their expertise in maintaining this engineering wonder during both peace and conflict.
Following the Engineering Tour, continue with the self-guided IOWA Experience. This includes historical exhibits, presidential tales, insights into sailor life, and a scavenger hunt for children across five decks.
